India received bids totaling 1.45 trillion rupees ($18.2 billion) on the first day of a 5G spectrum auction in which corporations run by some of Asia’s wealthiest men, including Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, battled for rights that might determine who controls the digital era.

India has put 72 gigatonnes of airwaves up for grabs for a 20-year lease in frequency bands ranging from 600 megahertz to 26 gigatonnes.
