According to Deseret News, more than 6,000 people signed a petition asking Utah State University to bar Kirk from coming onto its campus on Sept. 30 for another of his events.

Kirk has become a national figure as a conservative influencer and as the founder of Turning Point USA, an organization that pushes for conservative politics on high school and college campuses. In 2024, he spoke at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where he gave a speech focusing on what Kirk says he heard from young people around the U.S.

Early Life and Awakening to Conservatism

Charles James Kirk, better known as Charlie Kirk, was born on October 14, 1993, in the affluent Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, Illinois. Raised in the nearby town of Prospect Heights, Kirk grew up in a middle-class family that instilled in him the values of hard work and determination. His mother worked as a mental health counselor, while his father was an architect, providing a stable environment that Kirk would later credit for shaping his worldview

From a young age, Kirk displayed a natural inclination toward leadership and activism, influenced by the conservative ideals prevalent in his community.

As a high school student at Wheeling High School, Kirk became deeply involved in Republican politics. He volunteered for local campaigns and, notably, supported the 2010 U.S. Senate bid of Mark Kirk—a moderate Republican unrelated to him by blood.

This early exposure to the political arena ignited a passion that would define his life. Kirk has often recounted how attending Tea Party rallies in the Midwest during the summer of 2012 opened his eyes to the grassroots energy of the conservative movement. By his senior year, he was already organizing events and speaking out against what he saw as liberal indoctrination in schools. Despite his ambitions, Kirk never completed college; he dropped out after starting at Harper College, choosing instead to pursue full-time activism. This decision, unconventional for many, became a cornerstone of his “anti-establishment” persona.

Founding Turning Point USA: Mobilizing the Youth

In 2012, at just 18 years old, Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA (TPUSA) with William Montgomery, a fellow young conservative. The organization was born out of frustration with what Kirk perceived as the dominance of left-leaning ideologies on college campuses. TPUSA’s mission was clear: to identify, educate, train, and organize students to promote the principles of fiscal responsibility, free markets, and limited government. Under Kirk’s leadership as executive director, the group exploded in growth. From a handful of chapters, it expanded to over 3,500 high school and college campuses across all 50 states, boasting more than 150 full-time staff members.

Kirk’s strategy was innovative and aggressive. He launched initiatives like the Professor Watchlist, which exposed educators accused of pushing liberal biases, and the School Board Watchlist, targeting local officials. These tools resonated with conservative donors, who poured millions into TPUSA. By 2016, Kirk had become a fixture at Republican National Convention events, delivering speeches as one of the youngest speakers. His social media savvy—amassing over 12 million followers across platforms—allowed him to reach 150 million people monthly, turning TPUSA into a powerhouse for youth mobilization.

Critics, however, accused TPUSA of fostering division. Reports emerged of white supremacists attending events, and Kirk’s organization faced backlash for not distancing itself from such elements. Undeterred, Kirk doubled down, using viral videos of campus debates to “shut down” liberal students, titles like “45 Minutes of Charlie Kirk SHUTTING DOWN College Kids” becoming staples on his channels.

Media Empire and Political Influence

Kirk’s ascent continued into the media realm. In October 2020, he launched The Charlie Kirk Show, a three-hour daily radio program syndicated on Salem Media’s “The Answer” network. The podcast quickly climbed the charts, surpassing 100 million downloads by 2022 and ranking among the top 10 news shows on Apple Podcasts. Kirk’s unfiltered style—blending commentary on current events with calls to action—made him a go-to voice
