Watch Fonacab Video appears to show a taxi driver holding a passenger at gunpoint

A Northern Ireland taxi firm, FonaCab, has responded to footage circulating on social media that appears to show one of its drivers holding a passenger at gunpoint.

The footage, which was captured on a dashcam inside the taxi, shows the driver holding a firearm to the front seat passenger before threatening him and then hitting him with the firearm.

FonaCab said it is aware of the incident and is working with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) to investigate.


A spokesperson for FonaCab said: “We are aware of dashcam footage of an incident involving a fonaCAB driver.

“fonaCAB has been liaising with the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) Northern Ireland and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (P.S.N.I) regarding this.

“Due to the nature of the content of the footage, it would be inappropriate to make any further comment while investigations are undertaken.”

The PSNI has confirmed that it is investigating the incident.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: “Police are aware of a video circulating on social media which appears to show a man being threatened with a firearm by a taxi driver.

Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference 1740 of 31/05/23.”

The DVA has also said that it is investigating the incident.

A spokesperson for the DVA said: “We are aware of the incident and are working with the PSNI to investigate.

“We will take appropriate action once the investigation is complete.”

The incident has caused widespread concern and has raised questions about the safety of passengers using taxis in Northern Ireland.

The PSNI has urged anyone who is a victim of a crime or who witnesses a crime to report it to police immediately.
